Ovarian surgery covers procedures to remove a cyst from the ovary (cystectomy) or, where necessary, the whole ovary (oophorectomy). Wherever possible the aim is to preserve healthy ovarian tissue, particularly in women who wish to retain fertility or avoid an early menopause.

Surgery is usually performed laparoscopically through small incisions under general anaesthetic. The cyst is carefully separated from the ovary and removed, then sent for pathology. Most women go home the same day or the following morning.

Recovery is typically one to two weeks. Mild abdominal discomfort and bloating are normal for the first few days.
